Yes. I am not going to beat around the bush about it. While I did go and get in line and have a man put ink on my left index finger with literally a twig and go press a blue button, I still think it was a complete waste of time.
Don’t get me wrong… I’m not being a cynic here. I am, on the contrary, quite a romantic when it comes to politics and ‘the rights and responsibilities’ and everything like that. I was amongst the first in line when the anti-corruption movements broke out, complete with a tricolour scarf and a camera, shouting slogans to add to the volume. Probably I’m too much of a romantic because I still don’t see a lot of sense in voting. (It’s a different thing that the elections were merely local MCD elections). Or, maybe, I’m a bit of a romantic but more pragmatic about it to not be able to see too much sense in it (there are enough points on that side of the debate).
More importantly, I don’t care too much about it obviously, to go seek opinions and indulge in active debates to be convinced about it one way or another. I do, however, care about it enough to write a whole post about it.
Anyways… what bugs me more is the fact that everybody’s created such a neo-cool thing out of it. It’s become a bit like blood donation … or charity. All kinds of marketing campaigns with dubious interests come up with these ads and slogans – trying to make it sound cool. If voting was so damn important, there probably shouldn’t have been a need to come up with these campaigns. If it was so important, they should have made it compulsory – as simple as that.
Either ways, I was dragged out of bed on a Sunday morning by my folks to go vote for someone I had never heard about. All I did, was ask ’em who is in power now – and I voted for the other guy.
How does it matter? It’s probably going to take a revolution to change the system anyways… And election is not a synonym for revolution. But yes, remember to wake me up when that starts, you won’t even have to finish the sentence.
