The biggest hurdle in determining what you really like is your own success. There are many things attributed to success generally, money, power and fame being the largest drivers, making you think that this is what happiness must be. Money can help buy things that give you material happiness (like the base scent in a perfume, which lasts for a few seconds / minutes); power, a heady rush that gives you control over this uncontrollable world; fame can help give you the impression that so many aspire to be you, so this must surely be a coveted spot you are in, so you must like it (like it is an implicit social condition, else you move away from the majority, and in this day and age, majority is god and they decide the rule).
So, how can you get away and determine something you truly like? My attempt at this was to always give a higher weightage to the opinions of my critics. Once when I told this philosophy to a very intelligent guy in an elevator, he mentioned that you need to be extremely secure personally to do this to yourself (and therefore I realized why I was so insecure).
Moreover, it made me realize that this is an addiction; just like the addiction to pain, wherein you don’t know why the concept of hurting yourself is logical and illogical at the same time. You just do this to yourself for everything; and then, when you are at your most vulnerable stage, someone breaks you irreparably. Its like you are naked then, and the world is pointing at you and laughing. That is when you are born, and what you like then on, is what you really like..
