One of the most surreal things happened today. A very senior person who is respected in many circles sat down for lunch with me and a bunch of others today and we started to talk about life, work, learning and other such stuff.

I don’t really recall the question that prompted him to do so, but suddenly he started recollecting his life’s experiences. He told us about how, when he was in college, he barely had any money to even pay for his tea at the local tea vendor. He then went on to tell us about how he had absolutely no money while he passed out of college, and he started taking up just any kind of work that came his way.

He told us about how he spent hungry nights, not knowing how he would even eat the next day. And then, while he spoke about his hardships, he had tears in his eyes.

There was this man, someone who other people are generally afraid of, sitting in front of me and recollecting his life, and wiping the tears that were breaking the dams in his eyes.

The lunch ended and we went on to do whatever we were doing, but I’m sure all of us remembered that man and his tears while he recollected his hardships.

I realise now that the display of vulnerability and fallibility by that man actually created a new found respect for us. Atleast for me.

I also realised how lucky I am to actually have decent work, something that I can still appreciate all things considered, no matter how much I hate it at times. Imagine, there are people who don’t even get that. No matter how skilled or competent they might be do actually do it.

These little things, how they put perspective in life.
